New service for young people in Bingham & Magdalene!

community_renewal_small (3)-1Community Renewal are delighted to announce that 2 new staff have joined our team to deliver services for young people aged 16 to 24 years of age, who are looking for assistance with a range of issues in their local areas.

Community Renewal who have delivered the Employment Safety Net (ESN) in Muirhouse for many years and assisted hundreds of young people onto positive destinations, such as further education, apprentices and employment to name but a few, are excited about bringing these services to both Bingham & Magdalene as well as covering Craigmillar.

As well as the Employment Safety Net (ESN) we will also assist young people who are identified and referred to the service for Activity Agreements, for more details on this service you can speak to Emily & Craig for eligibility.

Our 2 new Employability Case Workers are Emily and Craig, so here are a few words from them, about what they will be doing in your areas –

Hello! We’re Craig and Emily and we’ve recently joined the team at Community Renewals East office in Craigmillar.

We hope that in time we become familiar faces as we work in Craigmillar, Bingham & Magdalene and surrounding areas.

So what is it we’re doing?

Well, we’re working with young adults (between 16 and 24) who are looking for a wee bit of advice or guidance. It doesn’t have to be about jobs; it can be about housing, apprenticeships, health and wellbeing, personal development, volunteering, working towards college or just seeing what’s available to you in your area.

We’re not here to force you into a job you don’t like, or send you on a college course which sounds like your worst nightmare, we’re just here to help you discover your goals, and offer support to achieve these.

Where can you find us? On Mondays and Tuesdays we are at the Community Renewal Office 3 Hay Avenue in Craigmillar,

Wednesday afternoon 1-5pm  you’ll find us at Magdalene Community Centre as a base in that area.

Thursday afternoons from 1-5pm and all day Friday  9-3pm we’ll be at Bingham Community Centre as a local base, but we are happy to come to you, if these times and locations don’t suit you.

We will also be chapping on doors in your community to chat to young people so we can try to provide a service which is most useful to you as young adults.

In the future, we plan to run information sessions with workers from various organisations such as Venture Scotland, SDS, Gate 55, but these sessions will be based on what is useful and interesting to YOU. We’d love your opinions on how you’d like to see this service develop.

Archie Lowe, Project Lead at Community Renewal’s East office said ” This is an exciting project for Community Renewal and to be able to focus this on areas that traditionally have had little or no services such as this for a long time, will bring positive benefits to young people who fit in with the ESN eligibility.  We are aiming this project at specific sector of young people, those who are disengaged from mainstream provisions and are –

Experiencing mental health issues

Have a disability, additional support needs

Care Leaver

Experience/involved in the youth justice system

Young parent(s)

Young Carer(s)

Anyone can make a referral to us and Craig & Emily will meet with them or a Support Worker to take forward.  It is anticipated that this project will last for three years, and we will work with the young person to achieve a positive destination during this time.”
