Fresh Start Service Update

As 2016 has begun, we have seen increased interest in our Community Growing Space in Craigmillar which has been fantastic.  The planning meeting we held on 18th January at the Hays Business Centre was very successful, with a solid growing plan for the coming year created. We’re looking forward to growing a wide range of fruit and vegetables from tatties to tomatoes and much more. We’re still looking for more volunteers to help us grow and maintain the growing space; a willing attitude is all you need!

We kicked January’s Hit Squad off with the volunteers being given the opportunity to brush up their skills with JC Lindsay; a professional painting and decorating company.  They donated one of their painters, Pete, to us for the week. Pete went out painting with Fresh Start volunteers on a local Hit Squad and helped to transform 2 rooms in a client’s home in just one short day. Volunteers also had the opportunity to attend a paint demonstration, where they learnt handy tips and tricks.

Without our fantastic volunteers we would not be able to provide this service to help people who have previously been homeless to settle in their new home.

If you would like to join our team of painting volunteers then please just get in touch.Fresh Start Hit Squad painting before after

The cooking classes at the Hearts Community Supporters Club continue to be a success, with the classes whipping up a storm in the kitchen. In the past few weeks the classes have chosen to prepare chilli con carne, spaghetti bolognaise, chow mein and flapjacks, all of which have looked, smelled and tasted delicious.

In our next class the participants have chosen to make a seasonal curried parsnip soup; the recipe is below, why not give it a go and see what you think?

If you’d like to learn how to make this and other delicious healthy recipes then get in touch to learn more about our cooking classes based in Craigmillar.

If you’d like to get involved in any of our services please do get in touch at helpinghands@freshstartweb.org.uk or on by contacting Emily on 07464 541 796.
