Working with willow

Craigmillar Community Grows, a project run by Carr Gomm, is inviting people to attend their willow harvesting and wreath making workshops in December.

They are seeking participants that would like to help maintain land at the Greendykes allotments by cutting down live willow on Tuesday 8 December 2015 at 1pm. The allotment group have a wildlife area which they say is overrun with the plant so they welcome anyone who wants to cut some down.

Willow is often used in craft making due to it’s strong but bendable quality and has often been used to create baskets or garden decorations. Craigmillar Community Grows are cutting some for making wreaths but they say that you can also take some home for planting or craft. If you are interested they ask that you bring loppers and secateurs.

This will take place at Wauchope gardens which is near the Moffat early years nursery and close to the Venchie which is located at 61 Niddrie Mains Terrace.

There you will be meeting with the local rangers who will show you how to fashion the willow into decorative wreaths.

There is no need to book for either event, if you are interested you can just turn up on the day.
