Castlebrae publishes Winter newsletter

DSC06194Castlebrae Community High School has recently published its Winter newsletter containing lots of updates on the school.

The newsletter states that it is extremely proud of the achievements of it’s pupils which includes a significant rise in attainment levels from the school.

It states that by the end of S5, those achieving 5 or more awards at Level 4 or more rose from 56% to 76%, those achieving 5 or more awards at Level 5 or more rose from 15% to 28% and those achieving 1 or more awards at Level 6 or more rose from 6% to 56%. The percentage of pupils achieving Level 4 or 5 in Literacy and Numeracy has also increased dramatically by 4 times.

They have also recently launched a partnership with Stirling University stating that one of the reasons for this is due to the University’s track record in attracting first generation students. They have introduced a programme of events which has been specifically tailored for the school.

Details of some of the work with primary schools are also noted. One of them, their ‘Primary Detectives’ had pupils following mathematical clues, measuring angles, breaking codes and using co-ordinate directions to uncover the identity of the wanted person.

Lots of news is has also come from their work with the arts and creative studies such as S1 pupils writing poetry as part of National Poetry Day, pupils hosting a Creative Conversations Breakfast, Keith Preston from S6 won an award at an annual award ceremony for talented young artists in Edinburgh, the schools work with the Edinburgh International Festival to create an exhibition which is currently on display at The Hub and the premiere of the film ‘From Castlebrae With Love’ which was met with a large round of applause.

Pupils also were taken on trips and took part in workshops with Mozart’s Opera, The Magic Flute and the Edinburgh Secondary Schools Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Vibe project. Pupils are also enjoying their work with Drake Music Scotland and will hold a debut performance later in the year.

A team of Home Economics pupils have set up ‘Red’ again where staff and visitors can enjoy a tasty meal on Tuesday lunchtime. You can be added to the mailing list or make a booking by emailing castlebraered@gmail.com. Their menu will also be published here at Chronicle Online.

One pupil, Jai Parsons, who was the runner up in the national final of FutureChef 2015 was invited to demonstrate some of his dishes at the Scottish Learning Festival. Some students also took part in a residential course in Dundee to develop their skills in teamwork, navigation and map-reading. A group of students also travelled to East Fortune racetrack to race their Green Power Car, built with support from Edinburgh College. Three pupils also went on a 200 mile voyage with the crew of a Tall Ship, you can see more about their adventures in our article here.

The newsletter also contains stories from two former pupils of the school where they give an update on what they have been doing since leaving Castlebrae. To find out more about this and on all of the news stories above, please see their newsletter here.

  1. What a brilliant read. I had no idea there was so much going on in the school and it is all so positive. This definitely shows that the School has turned a corner and under the new Head Teacher and her staff the pupils are thriving, although we shouldn’t be complacent as there are still people who are happy to criticise.
