A consultation from Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust (ELGT) is currently underway for options for a new park at the old Portobello High School site.
To compensate for the increased size of the replacement of St John’s RC Primary School, which will double the schools size compared to its current site adjacent to the former Portobello High School, the City of Edinburgh Council have allocated £1m towards the design and delivery of a new park. Separate funding will support the consultation carried out by the City of Edinburgh Council’s partner, ELGT.
Options being explored in the consultation is the landscaping design of the park, for example whether it has wild flowers and shrubbery, a natural design with maintained flower beds or hard landscaping such as concrete slabs with plants and trees in beds. Other options include the style of the parks boundary, potential entrances, uses for the park such as for walking, relaxing, playing, sports or events and other features that might be included such as natural play or play equipment. Suggestions are also being taken on a name for the new park and these will be put to a vote at a later date.
The survey can be found online and comments on this first stage of consultation will be accepted until Friday 30 October 2015. The results will be taken back to Craigentinny and Duddingston Neighbourhood Partnership who will approve the draft design concepts. Three drawings will then be produced with an opportunity for people to view and comment on the proposals before a final plan is published.

Work on the new park is expected to begin in Summer 2018 once the new Portobello High School is opened and the old school is demolished.
