Portobello’s Sixth Apple Day is tomorrow, Saturday 24 October, 2-4.30 pm at the community orchard, Brunstane Road South, just opposite the entrance to Brunstane. Apple Day is run by PEDAL – Portobello Transition Town. They will be pressing apples to make juice so please bring along some apples if you can and an empty bottle so you can take some home with you. You’ll be tasting some apples you may never have heard of and picking the crab apples that are just ripening. There will also be tea, coffee and home baking and sales of local apple juice, jam and chutney. There will be a fire to keep us all warm and for your entertainment there will be games and music. PEDAL hope you will come along and join in for an afternoon of fun at this celebration of nature’s abundance.

24 October from 10:00 to 14:00 at The White House Niddrie Mains Road with the development team – Phyllis, Peter and Jennifer. 30 October from 10:00 to 18:00 at The White House Niddrie Mains Road a Chronicle Day – a drop in day to see what the site looks like and work out a programme to take it forward. There will be cake to celebrate our achievements! Everyone is welcome to come to all or any of the events. Do just drop in for half an hour if that is all the time you have. The team will be very glad to see you!
The Helping Hands project is based in Craigmillar and is run by Fresh Start in conjunction with Castle Rock Edinvar. They deliver a range of social and practical services to adults who have a history of homelessness, and those who are socially isolated. Their services include a cooking class, a community growing space and a decorating service. They are currently looking to recruit volunteers to help provide of a decorating service and a community growing space. Portobello for Young People! Portobello Community Council (PCC) have been working with Edinburgh Council’s Community Learning and Development team to gather views on services for young people in the area. There’s an opportunity to hear the results of that research and discuss how services and facilities for 10 to 17-year-olds can be shaped or improved in future. Links Community and Redeeming Our Communities (Scotland) have put out an invitation to participate in a ‘ROC Conversation’, a community discussion and networking event in Craigmillar. ROC Conversations bring together service providers, service users and local people to share good practice as well as identifying gaps, and to consider how to work and share more effectively. Links has been working in Craigmillar over the past year, and want to better connect with other voluntary and statutory agencies in the community. The event is on Thursday 29 October, at Craigmillar Library 2pm – 4pm with refreshments available from 1.45pm. Do you live with diabetes and sometimes feel that you’d like to talk to other people who understand what it’s like? The Craigmillar Diabetes Peer Support Group meets once a month in the Library to talk about diabetes, hear guest speakers and get information and practical hints and tips on living with the condition. Please do go along and share your experiences. The next meeting will be on Saturday, 7th November at 10:15 in the Front East room, Craigmillar Library.
New funding for community greenspaces – applications open now. Communities will soon be able to apply for up to £12,000 for local greenspace projects through a new grant scheme being funded by the ‘plastic bag tax’. There are likely to be two funding rounds a year for the next three years. The first funding round opened on 19 October 2015 and will close on 30 November 2015. The scheme is open to community groups, charities and some public sector organisations and will fund capital improvement projects such as parks, play areas, community gardens and other greenspaces. The scheme is managed by environmental charity Groundwork, working in Scotland with Greenspace Scotland.

A special service at the start of October at the Robin Chapel, in Craigmillar, when the Sovereign’s Standard of the Blues and Royals was laid up in the Chapel. The Robin Chapel was built in memory of Robin Tudsbery, who was a 25-year old Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards (The Blues) when he was killed in action in the last days of the Second World War. The fundamental purpose of Twende Pamoja is to develop a global vision through forming relationships between communities and young people of different ages.
Makutano is a growing network of relationships bringing together people who seek to develop and bring about a vision of life as it could be. There are over 50 Scottish and Tanzanian young adults presently involved. The group includes young people of different Christian denominations, young Muslims and people with no religious beliefs or connections. A group of young African Americans from New Orleans and some young people in West Bengal are about to connect.
There will be a meeting for any young adults in the 16 to late 20’s age group in St John’s Church Hall, Brighton Place, Portobello this Sunday (25 October) at 7.00pm. This is for anyone who may be interested in finding out more about what is developing and different ways of being involved – from taking part in occasional discussions to being involved with ICT developments, enterprise activities and arts projects. In 2016 there will also opportunities to travel abroad, help with workshops in primary schools and climb Kilimanjaro. If you would like to know more you would be most welcome to come along on Sunday evening whether you have previously been involved in any way or not, as would any of your friends.
